Historical Note
James Henry Carlisle was the third president of Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. from 1875 to 1902. Born in Winnsboro, S.C. on May 4, 1825, Carlisle graduated from South Carolina College in 1842. He became professor of mathematics and astronomy at the newly established Wofford in 1854. He died October 21 1909. J. H. Carlisle, Jr. was born August 22, 1863 on Wofford's campus. He was a teacher and dealt in real estate. He died February 27, 1940
