Abstract

This interview was conducted by Rosanna Thomas with Sgt. Walter Deitz Sr. for the Veterans History Project at the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections at Winthrop University. Deitz discusses his decision to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966 rather than wait to be drafted, his basic and infantry training at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune, and his training as a tank mechanic in California. He describes his service in Vietnam, including his assignment to Hill 55, his experiences during and following the Tet Offensive, and his duties operating and maintaining tanks and recovery vehicles. Deitz recounts several experiences in the combat zone, including serving at the Nam O Bridge, responding to attacks, traveling between locations during the monsoon season, and an incident in which an accidental bomb explosion killed Marines near his position. He also describes the difficulties of returning to his unit after a period of leave in Hawaii and his subsequent service at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, before receiving an early discharge in 1970.

The interview also addresses Deitz's experiences returning to civilian life after the Vietnam War, including his observations of public attitudes toward veterans and his transition to a career as a mechanic. Deitz and his wife, Patricia, discuss maintaining contact during his deployment through letters and cassette recordings, family life during his military service, and the challenges of being separated from family. Deitz reflects on his military service, his decision not to reenlist, and his feelings about his children and grandchildren serving in the military. The interview concludes with reflections on military service, the draft, patriotism, and the lasting significance of his experiences as a Vietnam veteran.
