Abstract
This interview was conducted by Baylee Hughes with Courtney Littlejohn, a Winthrop University alumna who graduated in December 2010, as part of the Being LGBTQIA+ at Winthrop oral history project. The project documents the experiences of historically marginalized LGBTQIA+ students, alumni, and employees at Winthrop University. Ms. Littlejohn discusses her decision to attend Winthrop, her experiences as a sport management major, and her involvement in the Honors Program, departmental organizations, work-study positions, and LGBTQIA+ advocacy efforts. She reflects on navigating campus as a Black lesbian student, describing the support she found through friends and faculty, the development of Safe Zone initiatives on campus, and an early experience of discrimination involving a residence hall roommate. Ms. Littlejohn also examines the intersections of race, sexual orientation, and faith, discussing the challenges of finding affirming Christian communities while maintaining a strong religious identity. Throughout the interview, she offers thoughtful reflections on campus climate, inclusion, allyship, and the importance of creating welcoming spaces where LGBTQIA+ students can fully participate in university life.
