Abstract
This interview was conducted for the as part of the Winthrop History Project spearheaded by Winthrop President Emeritus Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio and Rebecca Masters to “document the 24-year path of the original Winthrop College to becoming Winthrop University.” This effort was to produce a history of the institution and Dr. DiGiorgio’s tenure as president as a supplement to Dr. Ross Webb’s history of Winthrop (The Torch is Passed) that covered Winthrop history up to Dr. DiGiorgio becoming president. A key aspect of the project was a series of audio-taped interviews conducted with various members of the extended Winthrop community who participated in or helped guide the advancement of Winthrop over these years. That way, the Winthrop story will be told in an array of participants’ own words, own voices and from their own perspectives.
This interview is of Alcides “Cid” Carvalho who was the Head coach of the Women’s Tennis Team until the program was disbanded in 2020. He is a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil and came to Winthrop College as a Junior in 1979. He played on the tennis team as their number one player until his eligibility ran out in 1980. He graduated from Winthrop in 1981 with a degree in Physical education and later became the Head Coach of the Women’s Tennis team in 1986 and the Men’s Tennis Team in 1987. He was the duel Head Coach of the Tennis Teams through 2011 with the exception of 1988 when he briefly stepped down to Assistant Head Coach while he completed his master’s degree from Winthrop (1989). In 2011, Winthrop decided to have a separate Men’s and Women’s head coaching duties and Cid became the Women’s Head Coach while another coach was hired to head the Men’s team. He has been voted Big South Conference Women’s Coach of the Year nine times and Men’s Coach of the Year for the Big South three times.
