Abstract
This interview was conducted by Stacy Steele with her son, Caleb Steele, as part of Project 2020: A Collaborative Oral History. At the time of the interview, Caleb was an eighth-grade student at Saluda Trail Middle School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He discusses his experiences with fully virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting on the academic and social challenges associated with remote education. Although he maintained high grades, Caleb describes feeling that virtual instruction was less effective than in-person learning and expresses frustration with the lack of interaction with teachers and classmates. He also discusses the importance of self-discipline while learning from home, the challenges of online classroom environments, and the loss of opportunities for socialization with peers.
Project 2020: A Collaborative Oral History was spearheaded by Dr. O. Jennifer Dixon-McKnight, Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at Winthrop University. The project sought to document the diverse ways Americans experienced the unprecedented events of 2020, including the COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest, economic uncertainty, and public health challenges, by preserving firsthand accounts from individuals across a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
