Scope and Content Note

The Hayes–Steele Genealogical Collection consists of genealogical research and compiled family histories created by Claude R. Smith (1923–2015), a resident of Rock Hill and Lancaster, South Carolina. The collection documents the ancestry and descendants of the Hayes and Steele families and includes information on numerous allied families connected through marriage or kinship, including Anderson, Baker, Barron, Barry, Bigger, Boyd, Brandon, Brewer, Carothers, Drennan, Eakle, Edwards, Fee, Gladden, Henderson, Matthews, McClelland, McCreight, McFadden, Miller, Shillinglaw, Simril, Thomasson, Wherry, White, and Williams.

The materials consist primarily of genealogical compilations created by Smith during decades of research. Records include pedigree charts, descendant sheets, family group sheets, genealogical narratives, handwritten and typed research notes, and indexes. Supporting documentation includes correspondence, photographs, cemetery and tombstone photographs, obituary notices, newspaper clippings, marriage licenses and certificates, wills, census records, Social Security Death Index printouts, and cemetery and burial plot records. The collection also contains maps, including regional and topographical maps of York County and the Catawba River region, Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, and maps identifying locations associated with the Hayes family. Additional materials include house plans, photographs, and historical notes related to the “Old Miller Place,” a residence associated with the Hayes family near the Neely Creek area of York County.

The collection documents several generations of Hayes and Steele family members, with genealogical data spanning from the early eighteenth century through the early twenty-first century. Early ancestors represented in the research include Matthew Hayes of Fairfield County, South Carolina, and Archibald Steele (1728–1805). The collection also contains research files and genealogical sketches relating to numerous related families and individuals in South Carolina and surrounding regions.

This collection is organized into two primary sections: Genealogical Binders and Genealogical Notes. The Genealogical Binders represent Smith’s compiled and organized research on the Hayes and Steele families and include several bound volumes such as the Hayes books, Steele family books, and Some Begats of Matthew Hayes, which present genealogical information in chart and narrative form. These binders contain supporting materials such as photographs, marriage licenses, obituary notices, and correspondence related to Smith’s research.

The Genealogical Notes section contains research files arranged primarily by family group or individual. These files include genealogical summaries, descendant lists, research notes, census transcriptions, wills, and supporting documentation used in compiling the binder volumes. Additional folders contain maps, cemetery records, property and probate documents, historical sketches, and working materials related to Smith’s genealogical publications.

Additional Notes

This collection is organized into two sections: Genealogical Binders and Genealogical Notes. The Genealogical Binders were created by the author of this collection Claude R. Smith as the final product of his research into the Hayes-Steele Family. The Genealogical Notes are mostly copies of the material in the Genealogical Binders. There is also an Appendix at the end of this inventory with a Family Name index.

Provenance

Hayes-Steele Genealogical Collection was donated by Claude R. Smith’s son Steve Smith to the Louise Pettus Archives & Special Collections at Winthrop University.
