Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of a 28 page history of Rock Hill, SC and York County, SC, suggestions for scenes in the Rock Hill Centennial Pageant, and supplementary suggestions from the Pageant Committee. The history was written by Hampton M. Jarrell (1904-1980) for the Rock Hill Centennial in 1952 and includes the following chapters titled: “The Beginnings;” “The Revolution;” “Churches;” “Schools;” “The Negro;” “Coming of the Railroad;” “War, Reconstruction, and Red Shirts;” “Cotton To Town;” “The Mills;” “The Coming of Winthrop;” “Looking Backward;” The Suggested Scenes mirror the chapters in the History. The alternate title for the Rock Hill History Centennial Pageant was “Building the Good Town, Six Generations of People.” Hampton M. Jarrell was a professor of English at Winthrop from 1932 through 1969.
Provenance
The Rock Hill History Centennial Pageant collection was transferred to the Manuscript collection from Special Collections. Originally donated to the library in 1953.
