Historical Note

Dr. Frances Lander Spain (1903-1999) was a 1925 graduate of Winthrop with a Bachelor of Arts and later received a B. L. S. from Emory University (1936) and M. A. and Ph. D degrees from the University of Chicago (1940, 1944). Dr. Spain would later serve as the Director of Library and Professor of library science at Winthrop (1936-1949).

Scope and Content Note

The Lander Family History consists of a history of the Lander family descended from Samuel (1833-1904) and Laura Ann McPherson (1833-1914) of Lincolnton, North Carolina. The history titled The Descendants of Samuel and Laura Ann McPherson Lander was assembled by Frances Lander Spain (1903-1999) in 1986 and covers the Lander family from 1818-1986. A few of the allied families include: Drew, Faria, Henderson, Leonard, Long, McLees, McLeod, Prince, Slade, Stone, Sullivan, Williams.
