Scope and Content Note
Clara Barrett-Strait (ca. 1867-1948) was one of the foremost portrait painters in South Carolina during the first half of the 20th century. The Clara Barrett-Strait Collection consists of the manuscript, Clara Barrett-Strait: An Achievement and a newspaper clipping published in the State Magazine in 1985 about the artist, both written by former Winthrop professor Edwin S. James (1922-2011). Also included is a microcassette recording labeled “Clara Barrett-Strait 1983” and photographs and negatives of Clara Barrett-Strait’s portraits, all of which were compiled by Edwin S. James.
