Scope and Content Note
Clara Barrett Strait (ca. 1867-1948) was one of the foremost portrait painters in South Carolina during the first half of the 20th century. The Clara Barrett Strait Collection consists of the manuscript, Clara Barrett-Strait: An Achievement and a newspaper clipping published in the State Magazine in 1985 about the artist, both written by former Winthrop professor Edwin S. James (1922-2011). Also included is a microcassette labeled “Clara Barrett Strait 1983” that includes a recording of Mr. James talking about Clara, and photographs and negatives of Clara Barrett Strait’s portraits, all of which were compiled by Edwin S. James.
