Historical Note
Wade Hampton (1818-1902) was a Confederate Cavalryman during the American Civil War and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. He was a member of the South Carolina General Assembly in 1852 and served as a Senator from 1858 to 1861. After the Civil War, he served as Governor of South Carolina (1876-1878) and U.S. Senator for South Carolina (1879-1891).
Scope and Content Note
Wade Hampton (1818-1902) was Governor of South Carolina (1876-1878) and U.S. Senator for South Carolina (1879-1891). The Wade Hampton Collection consists of a program commemorating “Wade Hampton Day” on May 14, 1895, a short summary of his war record, and speeches honoring him.
