Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of six rolls of microfilm containing copies of volumes 6 through 36 of a published series documenting British involvement in the colonial Carolinas from 1711 to 1782. The volumes contain a variety of records relating to the administration and governance of South Carolina under British rule, including correspondence, meeting minutes, court records, orders, reports, commissions, accounting records, and other official documents. The bulk of the material consists of correspondence between officials in South Carolina and authorities in England. The correspondence includes orders and instructions from the Crown and other British officials to colonial governors and magistrates, as well as reports and other communications sent from South Carolina to England.

The volumes provide documentation of the political, governmental, legal, administrative, and economic affairs of colonial South Carolina during the eighteenth century. Several volumes contain additional material outside their primary date ranges, including commissions to the government of South Carolina, documents dating from earlier periods, and Orders in Council. The microfilm set was produced by William L. McDowell.

Volumes 1 through 5, covering the period from 1663 to 1710, are not included in the microfilm collection. Bound copies of these volumes are available in Special Collections under call number F272.G79 and contain material covering the years 1663–1684, 1685–1690, 1691–1697, 1698–1700, and 1701–1710, respectively. The volumes were indexed by A. S. Salley, Jr., and published by the Historical Commission of South Carolina between 1928 and 1947. The bound volumes include indexes to persons, places, and topics and reproduce records obtained by the Historical Commission in 1895 through W. Noel Sainsbury of London and his assistants.
