Scope and Content Note
The Dr. David Lowry Papers document the life and career of Dr. David Michael Lowry (1938-2025), an organist, musicologist, and music professor at Winthrop University from 1965 to 2011. Lowry was Professor of Music Emeritus at Winthrop and helped establish the York County Choral Society in 1981, serving as its artistic director for 31 years.
The collection consists of biographical and family materials, correspondence, certificates, church and recital programs, newspaper clippings, musical scores, photographs, physical media, and artifacts. Materials document Lowry’s education, teaching career, musical performances, research, and professional accomplishments. The collection includes numerous musical scores and research materials relating to North Carolina composer Eugene Bonner, including scores of Bonner’s compositions and materials related to The Masque of Susanna.
Photographs document Lowry’s family history, childhood, professional career, friends, colleagues, and musical activities from 1895 through approximately 2020. Artifacts and framed materials include academic regalia, awards, certificates, a York County Choral Society retirement trophy, and Lowry’s 2025 Order of the Palmetto, recognizing his contributions to music in South Carolina.
The collection provides insight into Lowry’s career as an organist and educator, his contributions to Winthrop University and the York County Choral Society, and his influence on the musical community of South Carolina.
