Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of a microfilm copy of the 1890 special census schedules enumerating Union veterans of the Civil War and widows of Union veterans residing in South Carolina. The records were created as part of the Eleventh Census of the United States and reproduce Microcopy No. 123, Roll 93: Schedules Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War, South Carolina Bundles 160 and 161, held by the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
The collection includes schedules for all thirty-five counties existing in South Carolina in 1890. The records generally provide the names of veterans or widows, rank, company, regiment or vessel, dates of enlistment and discharge, length of service, post office address, disability information, and additional remarks concerning military service or health. The schedules serve as an important source for documenting Union military service, postwar residence, genealogy, and the experiences of veterans and their families in South Carolina following the Civil War.
Bundle 160 includes records for Abbeville, Aiken, Anderson, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Chester, Colleton, Edgefield, Fairfield, Greenville, Hampton, Laurens, Lexington, Newberry, Oconee, Orangeburg, Pickens, Richland, Spartanburg, Union, and York Counties. Bundle 161 includes records for Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Kershaw, Lancaster, Marion, Marlboro, Sumter, and Williamsburg Counties.
