Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of microfilm copies of plat books, warrant books, and survey records relating primarily to York District and Lancaster District, South Carolina, dating from 1796 to 1882. The original records are held by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
The collection includes York District Plat Books containing recorded plats and surveys of land tracts from 1802 to 1878, as well as Lancaster District Commissioner of Locations plat books and warrant books documenting land surveys and grants from 1829 to 1882. Many of the Lancaster District plats concern land located along or within the Catawba Indian Boundary. Also included are volumes from the Secretary of State, Office of the Surveyor General State Plats (Columbia Series), which contain plats from across South Carolina, including York, Chester, Pickens, Anderson, and other districts.
The plats and related records typically include surveys of land tracts, names of landowners and adjoining property holders, acreage, waterways, roads, geographic features, and surveyor notations. These materials provide valuable documentation of land ownership, settlement patterns, boundary disputes, and the development of communities in South Carolina during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection is particularly useful for genealogical, legal, cartographic, and local historical research.
Reels include the following titles:
- York District Plat Book I Part One (Old Book A-C) 1802-1817
