Scope and Content Note

The Mary Duncan Bennett McWhorter Winthrop Collection consists of memorabilia documenting the student experiences of Mary Duncan Bennett McWhorter (b. 1946), a member of the Class of 1968, and her grandmother, Tennie Duncan Bennett (1872–1935), reflecting two generations connected to Winthrop College.

Materials related to McWhorter’s undergraduate years (1964–1968) include a “Class of 1968” rat cap, student identification cards, meal tickets, and a physical education recommendation card. Together, these items illustrate aspects of student life, campus traditions, and daily routines at Winthrop during the mid-twentieth century.

The collection also contains earlier items associated with her grandmother, including a postcard (circa 1915) depicting Bancroft Hall (Known as Johnson Hall then) and a photograph (circa early 1920s) of a Winthrop student posed in front of the courtyard fountain of Roddey Hall. A handwritten note on the reverse of the photograph reads “The Real Winthrop Feeling.” These items were sent to Tennie Duncan Bennett in Greenville, South Carolina, likely by a friend (Emily) who was attending Winthrop in the 1910s, and provide insight into earlier student perspectives and campus imagery.

Mary Duncan Bennett McWhorter, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, was a French major at Winthrop College and resided in Thomson, Richardson, and Phelps Halls during her enrollment. Collectively, the materials document continuity and change in student life at Winthrop across the early and mid-twentieth century.
