Scope and Content Note

The Uriel Presbyterian Church Ledgers Collection consists of two financial ledgers documenting the receipt and disbursement of funds for Uriel Presbyterian Church between 1961 and 1967. The volumes record tithes, contributions, and other income, as well as itemized expenditures and occasional notations of member names, providing insight into the financial management and congregational life of the church during this period.

Historical context for the collection reflects the long development of the congregation. Located approximately six miles northeast of Chester near the community of Lewis Turnout, Uriel originated as a mid-nineteenth-century preaching station associated with Fishing Creek and Cedar Shoals churches. Established around 1854 on land donated by local residents, the church served a growing population of farmers and planters seeking a closer place of Presbyterian worship. It was formally organized as an independent congregation on October 28, 1888, when members transferred from nearby churches and elected founding elders to guide the new body.

Together, the ledgers and historical background document both the administrative functions of the church in the twentieth century and its roots as a rural religious institution in the region.

Provenance

The Uriel Presbyterian Church Ledgers were donated to the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections by Wade Fairey in June 2023.
