Scope and Content Note
The John Frederick Walter Papers consist of a September 19, 2001 letter from John F. Walter to Claude R. Smith of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, concerning the military service of Hervey R. Smith in Company F of the Twenty-First Mississippi Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. The collection also includes Walter’s historical studies of two Confederate infantry regiments, as well as his obituary.
Walter’s research is represented through two works: Twelfth South Carolina Infantry (July 1982), which provides a brief regimental history, battle list, roster, and map, and Twenty-First Mississippi Infantry (May 1984), which offers similar documentation for that unit.
John Frederick Walter (1929–2020), a native of Queens, was the founder of the Institute for Civil War Research and Big Apple Genealogy.
Provenance
