Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of Jefferson Davis: A Statement Concerning the Imputed Special Causes of His Long Imprisonment by the Government of the United States, and of His Tardy Release by Due Process of Law, presented in a letter from the Honourable George Shea of New York, one of Davis’s legal counsel. The text was originally published in the New York Tribune on January 24, 1876, and later reprinted as a booklet in London by Edward Stanford in 1877.

Included as part of this publication are typescript copies of two letters: one from Horace Greeley to George Shea dated April 8, 1867, and Shea’s reply dated April 17, 1867.
