Historical Note
Mary During her time at Winthrop, Mary Wright Williams (1916-2009) was voted “Most Popular” by her peers. She went on to devote much of her life to public service and received numerous honors, including the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto (2000), Orangeburg Citizen of the Year (1979), and the Orangeburg Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Award (1983), among others. She was an active clubwoman and served on many boards in Orangeburg and throughout South Carolina.
Scope and Content Note
The Mary Wright Williams Papers contain materials related to the student years and later accomplishments of Mary Elizabeth Wright Williams (1916–2009), a 1937 graduate of Winthrop College. Items include a 1936 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities featuring an entry on Mary Wright, as well as materials documenting her receipt of the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award in 1987. The Sullivan Award “recognizes a Winthrop alumna for selfless dedication of time, energy, and talent in service to others.”
