Scope and Content Note
The Historic Rock Hill Collection consists of materials relating to the history of Rock Hill, South Carolina and its notable historic buildings, businesses, and people. The collection also documents the pioneering White Family of Rock Hill as well as the history of Historic Rock Hill, a nonprofit historical preservation organization headquartered at the historic White Home in Rock Hill, SC. Founded in the 1980s as the Midtown Preservation Association, the group continues to work to preserve and promote the many historic sites and stories of Rock Hill through preservation projects and educational programming. HRH records (by-laws, newsletters, agendas, etc.), photographs, newspaper clippings, publications, programs, large prints, and other historical items are included. Most of the collection consists of subject files relating to Rock Hill and York County, SC—materials are largely from The Herald (formerly the Rock Hill Herald and The Evening Herald). Of interest are records documenting the 2000s restoration of the White Home (258 E. White St.) as well as photographs and newspaper clippings of Rock Hill churches and businesses—a detailed list can be found under “SERIES III. Subject File.”
Provenance
The Historic Rock Hill Collection was donated to the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections at Winthrop University by Historic Rock Hill via Jennifer Sandler, executive director, in June 2022; an addition was made by Stephen Turner, board member, on July 18, 2024.
