Scope and Content Note
The Thomas Sumter Reid Papers consists of genealogical research on various Rock Hill, SC and Chester, SC families by Thomas Sumter Reid (1890-1956). The research and records consist of genealogical and lineage charts, correspondence, notes, typescript copies of York County deeds and wills, census data, immigration data, and other records. Some of the more prominent family names listed alphabetically are Adams; Baskin; Bradley; Craighead; Crawford; Cureton; Drennan; Dunlap; Fayssoux; Gill; Lusk; Massey; Mills; Neely; Reid; Simpson; Workman; Zubly; Of particular interest in the collection is the typescript Civil War diary of Julius Mills (1839-1889), Major 17th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. The diary is more descriptive than many Civil War diaries and has many anecdotes and stories including “The Legend of Ravenswood” which concerns Ravenswood Plantation on John’s Island in Charleston County, SC.
