Scope and Content Note

The George H. Sullivan Triptych Collection consists of three antique Italian religious wooden triptychs. One is labeled, “Imported From Javit, Italy” and the other two are labeled as from “Sarti Enrico, Via Villani 23, Florence (Italy) N. 143.” The triptychs were donated most likely in the 1940s or 1950s by Mr. George Hammond Sullivan for the Winthrop Museum that used to be housed in the Tillman Science Building. George Hammond Sullivan (1859-1956) was and lawyer and was well known for his philanthropic work, just like his parents, Mary Mildred Sullivan (1836-1933) and Algernon Sydney Sullivan (1826-1887). Mary and Algernon were well-known for their philanthropy. One of the highest awards given at Winthrop University is the Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards and Algernon Sydney Sullivan awards which are handed out to a graduating senior who partakes in unselfish service and demonstrates an altruistic character.
