Scope and Content Note

Ruth Williams Cupp (1928-2016) was a Charleston attorney, writer, historian and graduate of Winthrop College (Class of 1950) and USC Law School (Class of 1954). Ruth practiced law in the Charleston area until she became the first woman to be elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives (1962-1964). She lost her bid for reelection in 1964, partially due to her support for Lyndon B. Johnson and his reelection efforts. The Collection consists mostly from newspaper clippings ranging from 1961 to 1965 and mostly refers to her political, professional, community and personal life. Also included are several photographs related to her political endeavors and correspondence and materials related to First Lady Bird Johnson and her tour of South Carolina and Ruth’s unsuccessful bid for reelection.
