Historical Note

Frances Elizabeth Crutchfield Kellers was born on December 22, 1912 to Mary Elizabeth Fairey Crutchfield and Junius Frederick Crutchfield in Orangeburg, SC. She had one brother, George Crutchfield, who would later marry Evelyn Spencer Vaughn. Frances attended Winthrop College from 1930 to 1934 and graduated with a B.S. in music. While at Winthrop, she was a member of Delta Kappa Zeta, the Athletic Association, the Student Government Association, the Y.W.C.A., the Glee Club, the Chapel Choir, the Music Club, the Masquers, and the Wade Hampton Literary Society. She married Frank Kellers, Jr. from Clinton, SC. Frances passed away on August 18, 1993 and is buried in Saint Matthews, SC.

Scope and Content Note

The Frances Crutchfield Kellers Winthrop and Family Letters Collection consists of letters written by Winthrop College graduate, Frances Crutchfield Kellers (1912-1993). Frances attended Winthrop from 1930-1934 and graduated with the Class of 1934. These letters are mostly addressed to her mother and father, describing various aspects of her time at Winthrop, her friends, her dorm-mates, her struggles and various escapades she enjoyed during her school days. The letters begin a few months before attending Winthrop and continue through the end of her junior year. Also included is a pocket calendar from the year 1986 as well as paper slips written by Frances Crutchfield Kellers in 1991 that give a brief summaries of some of the letters while at Winthrop.
