According to the National Register of Historic Places Inventory- Nomination Form for the Early Ironworks of Northwestern South Carolina submitted on March 31, 1987, the King’s Mountain Iron Company was formed in somewhere between 1815 and 1830 by Jacob Stroup. “The King’s Mountain Company was originally incorporated in 1832 as the South Carolina Iron Manufacturing Company…In 1836 it secured a new charter as the King’s Mountain Iron Manufacturing Company.” “At its height of production the King’s Mountain Iron Company was composed of the Cherokee Ironworks, which included the Cherokee Furnace, a forge, a blacksmith shop, grist mills, saw mills, and a number of buildings for laborers; the two outlying furnaces and a rolling mill. The King’s Mountain Iron Company existed under the organizational structure of the 1936 charter until just after the Civil War.”
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of microfilm copies of the minute book of the King’s Mountain Iron Company, a nineteenth-century iron manufacturing enterprise located in Cherokee County, South Carolina. The records primarily document the governance and operation of the company through minutes of annual meetings of the Board of Directors, reports of company officers, and financial statements relating to the management of the business.
The collection provides insight into the administration, finances, and development of one of South Carolina’s early iron manufacturing concerns. Topics documented in the records include corporate organization, election of officers and directors, financial performance, business decisions, and matters affecting the operation of the company’s ironworks and related facilities.
According to the National Register of Historic Places Inventory–Nomination Form for the Early Ironworks of Northwestern South Carolina (1987), the King’s Mountain Iron Company was established sometime between 1815 and 1830 by Jacob Stroup. Originally incorporated in 1832 as the South Carolina Iron Manufacturing Company, it received a new charter in 1836 as the King’s Mountain Iron Manufacturing Company. At its peak, the company operated the Cherokee Ironworks, which included the Cherokee Furnace, a forge, blacksmith shop, grist mills, saw mills, workers’ housing, two outlying furnaces, and a rolling mill. The company continued to operate under the organizational structure established by its 1836 charter until shortly after the Civil War.
The original records reproduced in this microfilm collection are housed at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. The collection is a valuable resource for the study of South Carolina’s early industrial development, iron manufacturing, business history, and the economic history of the Upstate region during the nineteenth century.
