Historical Note

The South Carolina Commission on Women was established in 1971 to “study the status of women and make periodic reports to the governor with its recommendations concerning educational needs and opportunities, to disseminate material relating to the rights, responsibilities and status of women.” This agency focuses mainly on the discrimination of women and makes recommendations for change. This organization publishes information to inform citizens on the status of women in the state of South Carolina.

Scope and Content Note

The South Carolina Commission on Women Records consist of correspondence, minutes, legislation, press releases and forms, and documents relating to the activities of the agency. Broadcast Awards, Domestic Violence Project, White House Conference on Families, A week of Films By and About Women, and National Associate of Commissions for Women Conferences. The South Carolina Commission on Women was created in 1970 to “study the status of women and make periodic reports to the governor with its recommendations concerning educational needs and opportunities, to disseminate material relating to the rights, responsibilities and status of women.”
