Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of a copy of Proceedings of the Convention of Southern Governors, Held In The City of Richmond, Virginia, on April 12th and 13th, 1893: With Papers Prepared By The Governors of Arkansas, Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia, In Regard To The Physical Resources of Their Respective States published in Richmond, VA by C. N. Williams, Printer in 1893. The purpose of the convention was to advance by “co-operation and concert of action the industrial interests and well-being” of the states of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri. Benjamin Ryan Tillman was in attendance from South Carolina, as well as Governors: William Meade Fishback (Arkansas; Thomas G Jones (Alabama); Murphy J. Foster (Louisiana); Frank Brown (Maryland); Elias Carr (North Carolina); Philip Watkins McKinney (Virginia); Included is a paper prepared by Gov. William Meade Fishback (1831-1903) of Arkansas concerning the physical resources of his state.
