Scope and Content Note
This collection includes memorabilia that belonged to Mai Rutledge Johnson (1878-1978) who was the wife of Winthrop’s founder and first president, David Bancroft Johnson. One item included is a book of poems titled, The Heart’s Quest by Archibald Rutledge written by Archibald Rutledge with an inscription to Mai Rutledge Johnson, “Dear Mai, With Love From Archie, March 12, 1946. Archibald Hamilton Rutledge (1883-1973) was a poet and educator who was the first South Carolina poet laureate from 1934-1973. Also included is a reunion booklet titled, Our Scrap Book by Margaret Jackson assisted by Lucy Hamilton which is a compilation of memories from the Winthrop days of the Class of 1929 scrapbook, a Winthrop Alumnae Magazine for Summer 1963, and a portrait labeled Dorothy Chisholm Johnson taken October 5, 1940.
