Historical Note

Vernon Simeon Plemion Grant (1902-1990) was an American illustrator known for his whimsical gnome characters and fairy tale drawings. He created advertising illustrations for several large companies and major magazines, but is best known for the Snap! Crackle! and Pop! characters for Kellogg’s Rice Krispies cereal. Mr. Grant married Elizabeth Fewell who was a native Rock Hillian and they eventually moved to Rock Hill, SC. Mr. Grant served several years on the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce and helped to found the award-winning Come-See-Me Festival in Rock Hill, SC.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a coloring book titled, Getting to Know Gnomes: A Book of Reading Rhymes and Coloring Times, which was published in 1991 by the Museum of York County. The coloring book was inspired by the illustrations of Vernon Grant and written and designed by Mary Lynn Norton and Jennifer Halls.
