Scope and Content Note
The Wade Hampton Contract was between Major James Russell and Wade Hampton stating that Russell owned Hampton for three bonds in the amount of $1666.66 each and the dates each are payable (1813, 1814, 1815). It is unclear whether the Hampton referred to is General Wade Hampton (1751-1835) or his son Wade Hampton II (1791-1858). It is more likely the elder Hampton because the younger would have been only 20 at the time and the reverse side states that the document is “a statement of the obligation due to General Hampton,” however the reverse appears to be in a different handwriting.
Provenance
The Wade Hampton Note was donated to the Archives by Pauline Brock Poplin - Beyer.
