Historical Note

William Stuart Hall, Sr. was born Fairfield County, SC and served in American Civil War in the Confederate Army. He served in State House of Representatives from Chester County from 1882-1883 where he advocated for the establishment of a Women’s College in the State of South Carolina which would later come to fruition with establishment of Winthrop Training School in 1886. William Stuart Hall, Jr. was a graduate of Wofford College and went on to become a prominent lawyer based in Gaffney, SC. He served as a State House of Representatives from 1908 to 1910 and served as a State Senator from 1910-1914. Elliott Holmes Hall was a graduate of Wofford College a prominent resident and educator in Chester, SC. Elliott also served as a state legislature from 1917 to 1918.

Scope and Content Note

The Hall Family papers consist of photocopies of newspaper clippings, genealogical information, notes, articles, obituaries concerning William Stuart Hall, Sr. (1840-1912), William Stuart Hall, Jr. (1869-1938), and Elliott Holmes Hall, Sr. (1878-1940). Of particular interest is an article ("The germ of Winthrop College") written by William, Jr. postulating that William, Sr. and Mrs. Walker, a teacher from the Great Fall, SC area, deserve some credit for the establishment of Winthrop.

William Stuart Hall, Sr. was born Fairfield County, SC and served in the American Civil War in the Confederate Army in Company A, 1st South Carolina Volunteers during the Civil War. He served in the State House of Representatives from Chester County from 1882-1883 where he advocated for the establishment of a Women’s College in the State of South Carolina which would later come to fruition with the establishment of Winthrop Training School in 1886. William Stuart Hall, Jr. was a graduate of Wofford College and went on to become a prominent lawyer based in Gaffney, SC. He served as a State House of Representatives from 1908 to 1910 and served as a State Senator from 1910-1914. Elliott Holmes Hall was a graduate of Wofford College a prominent resident and educator in Chester, SC. Elliott also served as a state legislature from 1917 to 1918.
