In 1985, Dr. Marcus Newberry agreed to become Winthrop's Interim President when Winthrop's seventh president, Philip Lader resigned to run for South Carolina Governor in 1985. Dr. Newberry would serve as Winthrop Interim President until Dr. Martha Kime Piper was installed as Winthrop's Eighth President in 1986.
