Historical Note

Frontis Brooks (1919-1989) was a former band director at Rock Hill, SC's segregated All-Black Emmett Scott High School (1941-1971) and a former principal at Sunset Park Elementary School where he organized the area's first elementary school band. He was a Julliard School of Music graduate and moved to Rock Hill in 1939. After retiring, he led the Senior Citizens Band and won numerous awards and accolades. Mr. Brooks was a World War II veteran.

Scope and Content Note

The Frontis Brooks Videotape Collection consists of a VHS Tape of a Senior Citizens Christmas Show that was directed by Frontis Brooks and a VHS tape that includes "Frontis Brooks: A Tribute" which was a 30 minute Special devoted to his memory and legacy held on May 30, 1989 just two days after he passed away.

Provenance

The videotapes of Frontis Brooks were donated by The Rock Hill Board of Parks & Recreation on August 11, 1989.
