Historical Note

The Irwin Family was in North Carolina by 1756. Addie Stokes Mayfield was Rock Hill native, a 1933 graduate of the Winthrop Training School and a 1937 graduate of Winthrop College. She taught history for thirty-three years in the Rock Hill, SC school system. Mayfield is also the author of A History of Dentistry in Rock Hill, S.C. among other publications. William Boyce White, Jr. was a Rock Hill native and taught at the Winthrop Training School (WTS) from 1958-1965 and taught at Rock Hill High School following the closing of the high school portion of the WTS. He also taught in Clover before coming to Winthrop. Mr. White is author and historian and was the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill from 1945 until he moved to Virginia.

Scope and Content Note

A Genealogy of the Family of Matthew Irwin (c. 1697-1767) of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina by Addie Stokes Mayfield and William B. White, Jr. chronicles the family's genealogy from 1730s to the 1890s. Please see attached Bibliography.
