Historical Note

James Strom Thurmond [1902-2003] was the Governor of South Carolina from 1947 to 1951 and a United States Senator from South Carolina for 48 years from 1954 to 2003. He was a member of the Winthrop Board of Trustees in 1937-1938.

Jean Crouch Thurmond [1926-1960] was a 1947 Winthrop graduate and was Strom Thurmond's first wife.

Scope and Content Note

The Strom and Jean Crouch Thurmond Scrapbook collection consists of three scrapbooks containing photocopies of clippings relating to Mr. and Mrs. Thurmond’s family life, as well as the political career of Strom Thurmond. Senator Thurmond’s first wife, Jean Crouch Thurmond was a 1947 graduate of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women.
