Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of materials relating to educators Gladys Hurley Boulware (1912–2014) and Richard Franklin Boulware (1911–2001), longtime African American educators and community leaders in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Included are funeral and celebration of life programs for both individuals containing detailed biographical information written by their daughter, Barbara Boulware Keith; photographs documenting the lives of Gladys and Richard Boulware, Barbara Boulware Keith, and extended family members; newspaper clippings relating to Richard Boulware’s educational career; materials commemorating Gladys Boulware’s 100th birthday celebration; a 1962–1963 West End School scrapbook compiled during Richard Boulware’s tenure as principal; and a 2010 paper titled “A Life and Times of Patricia Boyd Hinton.”
Richard Franklin Boulware was a 1932 graduate of Emmett Scott High School and a graduate of South Carolina State University. Over the course of his career, he served as principal of West End Elementary School for nineteen years, assistant principal of Emmett Scott High School for one year, and principal of Belleview Elementary School for five years. While at Belleview, he helped guide the school through the process of integration during the early 1970s.
Gladys Hurley Boulware also graduated from South Carolina State University, where she met Richard Boulware. She worked as an educator in several school systems across South Carolina and taught at Emmett Scott High School until its closure in 1970 following school desegregation. She later taught at Castle Heights Junior High School until her retirement.
Overall, the collection documents the personal lives, educational careers, and community contributions of two influential African American educators whose work spanned the eras of segregation and integration in South Carolina public education.
