Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of videotape of the film War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator which is based on the experiences of three Americans (Elliott White Springs, John McGavock Grider, and Lawrence Callahan) from the South flying during World War I. Elliott White Springs would publish Grider’s diary (who died during the war) as War Birds in 1926 which became a best seller. The film was produced through grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities by Robert Clem. The film was narrated by Joe Morton, with Frederick Weller as the voice of Elliott White Springs and Matthew Bomer as the voice of John McGavock Grider. The video was copyrighted in 2003, but completed in 2004.
