Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of Recollections of War Times. My Experiences In The West by Rev. S. P. H. [Silas Pinckney Holbrook] Elwell published by The Bamberg Herald Print in Bamberg, SC in 1895. The publication consists of his experiences in Mississippi during the War Between the States. Elwell served in the 23rd Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers. In May of 1863, Evans Brigade was ordered to Mississippi to strengthen Gen. Joseph E. Johnson’s army at Vicksburg. Rev. Elwell relates his experiences in this campaign. Rev. Elwell’s recollections were originally published in The Advocate.
