Rock Hill, SC can trace it's educational roots to local school houses and tutors, however the first tax-supported school was the Rock Hill Graded Schools which opened in 1888. In 1907, the former Catawba Military Academy building, which was located where Withers Building on Winthrop's campus is currently, was purchased and became the first school named Rock Hill High School. The school was closed following a dispute with Winthrop College over the rights to the property. A new Rock Hill High School building was then built at North Spruce and East White Streets in 1913. It remained at this location until 1965 when the school moved to the Sullivan Middle School location on Eden Terrace. Rock Hill High School then moved to its current location on Springsdale Road when it was built in 1977. The old Rock Hill High School on East White Street was torn done in 1978.
