Department Chair: Amanda Hiner, Ph.D.

The mission of the Department of English is to further students' understanding of the human condition through the study of literary and rhetorical expression, to develop students' reading and writing skills, and to support the growth of English as a profession. The Department seeks to offer students opportunities to analyze literatures from a variety of time periods, national origins, and cultural perspectives; an understanding of how language functions; an appreciation for and understanding of the aesthetic qualities of literary and nonliterary genres and forms; knowledge of multiple interpretive and critical tools; and the ability to use language creatively and effectively for exposition, persuasion, instruction, and/or artistic effect.
