Birthing Equality: A Qualitative Analysis of Lesbian Mothers

Beth A. Luther, College of Charleston

Abstract

This paper examines the differences in the processes of heterosexual and homosexual couples wanting to have children. During the pregnancy and birth, many issues arise for lesbian mothers that do not arise for straight mothers. Qualitative research will be used to draw this connection and show how living in a heteronormative world affects those who do not conform. Also addressing gender roles, and the factor they play on how society views mothers. I wish to bring light to these issues as well as further my understanding. As a lesbian woman I will understand what lies ahead and be able to navigate pregnancy with a more informed and experienced mindset.
