Description
Ethiopian, ca. 1880. Modern manuscript in a medieval style. Approx. 200 x 160 mm (written area approx. 145 x 130 mm). Double column, 22 lines. Thanks to Eyob Derillo, Ethiopian Manuscripts specialist at the British Library, we know that medieval manuscript #20 is part of the Homily of St. Michael, one of the most famous Ge’ez texts. He notes “18th or 19th century. Very strange hand, no consistency.”

Ge’ez—an ancient South Semitic language originating in the northern region of Ethiopia. Not spoken today, it is the main language used in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Amharic—a Semitic language spoken in Ethiopia. It is also the working language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church from medieval to modern times.
