Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of an address by James Rion McKissick (1884-1944) of Furman university to a joint session of the South Carolina General Assembly on March 23, 1927 concerning William H. Wallace and the events surrounding the South Carolina election of 1876. The address was given on the occasion of the presentation to the state of the robe and gavel used by Wallace as speaker of the House in 1876. It includes biographical information about Wallace. McKissick was president of the University of South Carolina from 1936 through 1944 and the McKissick Museum building on USC’s campus was named in his honor.
