Scope and Content Note
The Hurricane Hugo Newspaper Articles Collection consists of newspaper articles (September 22, 1989 – October 11, 1989) from The Herald, The Charlotte Observer, and The York Observer concerning the impact of Hurricane Hugo as it moved through South Carolina and North Carolina in September 1989. Hurricane Hugo made landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane on Isle of Palms, SC on September 22, 1989. It was still a tropical storm when it passed over Charlotte, NC. Damage from the storm was estimated at $5.9 billion in South Carolina alone and Hugo claimed 35 lives in SC.
Hurricane Hugo Newspaper Articles were given to the Archives by Ross Webb on November 2002.
