Historical Note

Elizabeth “Lib” B. Mahon (1919-2001) was a 1942 graduate ofWinthrop College and a star player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) from 1944-1952 mostly with the South Bend Blue Sox. Lib was a great athlete and an all-star outfielder. She twice led the league in RBIs and once stole over 100 bases.

Scope and Content Note

Elizabeth “Lib” Mahon is a Greenville, South Carolina native and a 1942 graduate of Winthrop College. She was an outfielder and second baseman for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) from 1944 to 1952 and played for the Minneapolis Millerettes, the Kenosha Comets and the South Bend Blue Sox. The Elizabeth Mahon Papers consists of an article titled “Journey from the Sandlots: Elizabeth “Lib” Mahon” by Jim Sargent, an article about Lib Mahon titled “Of Women’s Baseball League,” several copies of photographs of Lib during her AAGPBL career (also Tommie Thompson and Marge Stefani), and a signed reproduction baseball card, with her photograph and statistics. Also included in the collection is a program of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in which Lib Mahon was inducted in 2005.
