Historical Note

Rebecca F. DesChamps was born in Bishopville, SC in Lee County on August 23, 1886 to Frances J. DesChamps (1861-1897) and William Anna Fraser (1862-1937). She married merchant J. Baron Kelley (1872-1941) on November 20, 1907. She was known and often called "Little Rea" or "Little Rhea." She died on September 22, 1911 and is buried in Bishopville Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Bishopville, SC.

Scope and Content Note

The Rea DesChamps Collection consists of letters written to Rebecca “Rhea/Rea” DesChamps Kelley (1886-1911) of Bishopville, South Carolina from Winthrop students cousin Mabel Crosswell (Class of 1900), friend Sallie Walker (attended 1902-1904), and friend Grace Dell James (Class of 1907) between the years of 1899 and 1905. All three Winthrop students were from Bishopville, SC. Also included are two photographs (nd) of Winthrop students one of whom is identified as Mabel Crosswell, and the 1902 Winthrop Entrance Examination. Also included is a Winthrop Entrance Examination for potential students entering Winthrop with areas of examination being history, English grammar and composition, geography, and arithmetic and algebra.
