Scope and Content Note

The Hornbook History Collection consists of 2 Hornbooks entitled “The History of the Hornbook”: book entitled “The History of Jack and the Giants”: 3 cards entitled “The Hornbook”: “The Battledore”: 2 “New England Primer” (respectively): 5 Battledores, and 1 Slate. A hornbook was the first primer for children during colonial times and consisted of a thin, paddle shaped piece of wood with parchment page protected by a thin transparent sheet of horn. These books would teach children the alphabet, numbers, and often had the Lord's Prayer.

Provenance

The Hornbook History collection was transferred from the Reference Department in Dacus Library to the Archives on March 15, 1990.
