Historical Note

Cannon Mills (1887-2003) was a textile manufacturer based in Kannapolis, NC. The company produced a basic textile product for the consumer rather than making yarn to sell or making sheeting from yarn purchased from another mill. Founder James William Cannon’s (1852-1921) mercantile philosophy was to brand the fabric with the Cannon name rather than selling it simply as cotton cloth. In 1982 David H. Murdock purchased Cannon Mills and then sold it in 1986 to Fieldcrest, Inc. Cannon Mills then became known as Fieldcrest Cannon. Pillowtex acquired Fieldcrest Cannon in 1997, but after financial problems hit the company Pillowtex was forced into bankruptcy in 2003. The land that Cannon Mills plant was on was then purchased by David H. Murdock in late 2004, who razed the plant from 2005-2006.
