Scope and Content Note
The Benny Goodman Concert Albums Collection consists of an autographed copy of Benny Goodman's (1909-1986) two record set of his famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert in New York. Goodman, dubbed the “King of Swing” was the first major bandleader to use a racially integrated band and this concert was the first with an integrate band in Carnegie Hall. The Goodman autograph is on the back and reads "To Winthrop College Best Wishes, Benny Goodman." This particular edition was released in 1963. The albums feature such jazz greats as Count Basie, Gene Krupa, and Lester Young. It is not believed that Benny Goodman played at Winthrop.
Provenance
The Benny Goodman Concert Albums was given to the Archives by Dr. David Franklin on May 18, 1988.
